Men’s mental health: why do they still find it hard to ask for help?

Talking about mental health is talking about quality of life. Still, when it comes to emotional well-being, many men continue to face a silent obstacle: the difficulty of asking for help.

In a month dedicated to men’s health, Movember also invites reflection on an increasingly urgent topic: the importance of caring for the mind with the same attention given to the body.

A cultural silence that comes at a cost

For generations, society has taught men to “stay strong,” to “tough it out,” and not to show vulnerability. These deeply rooted ideas continue to have an impact today.

Recent studies from the World Health Organization show that men seek psychological support far less often than women and show greater resistance to acknowledging symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Many still associate emotional suffering with weakness, when in reality, it is a human and universal experience. This reluctance to seek help often leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, increasing the risk of serious complications such as burnout, substance dependence, and even suicide.

Depression and anxiety: different in men

Symptoms of depression and anxiety often appear differently in men. Instead of visible sadness, it is common to see signs such as:

  • irritability and outbursts of anger;
  • isolation or social withdrawal;
  • increased use of alcohol or other substances;
  • decreased work performance;
  • changes in sleep and appetite;
  • lack of motivation and energy.

Recognizing these signs is essential to breaking the cycle of silence. The sooner help is sought, the more effective the treatment and the better the recovery.

The importance of emotional prevention

Taking care of the mind is also a way to prevent physical and emotional illnesses. Chronic stress, for example, is linked to heart, digestive, and immune system problems, and contributes to fatigue and irritability.

Adopting healthy lifestyle habits — such as getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining a balanced diet, and speaking openly about emotions — is essential to preserving emotional balance.

It is equally important that institutions, families, and workplaces encourage open dialogue and normalize psychological support as part of overall health care.

The power of communication and leading by example

When public figures, community leaders, or health professionals speak openly about their emotional experiences, they help break the stigma.

Change begins with example — within families, among friends, and in workplaces. Showing that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but of responsibility, inspires others to do the same.

As in any other area of health, prevention and timely intervention save lives.

Caring for the mind is also an act of courage

Mental health should be seen as an integral part of overall health. Seeking help, speaking with a professional, and acknowledging one’s emotions are essential steps toward a balanced life.

At Misericórdias Saúde, emotional well-being is a priority. Multidisciplinary teams are ready to support anyone facing psychological vulnerability, providing care that is human, confidential, and accessible.

Taking care of the mind is an act of courage — and also a way to care for one’s family, friends, and life itself.
